I can’t control circumstances

“Supposing a tree fell down, Pooh, when we were underneath it?” asked Piglet to Pooh
“Supposing it didn’t,” said Pooh after careful thought.
Piglet was comforted by this.

I have been a worrier all my life. It took decades to understand its impact on me and I work hard at mitigating worry.

It begins with fortune telling.

I worry when I focus on things I can’t control.

I can’t control a circumstance

When I try very hard to control the circumstance I worry a lot

This past month I have found myself worrying about my loved one with dementia’s future.

Her assets are dwindling quickly.

The assisted living facility is very expensive

She does not have sufficient income to afford the facility without state aid.

I have started the process to seek aid but I have reservation about the care she is receiving.

The adult day health program she was attending has shut down permanently, never to be restarted.

This is a direct result of the Covid virus and its impact on programs such as adult day health.

I found another facility that has a day program for its residents.

We toured the facility and she likes it.

It is actually the facility that held the adult day health program for the public.

She loved going to the program and misses it.

If she moves to this facility she can attend.

They are holding a seat for her at the program.

We submitted an application and we are scheduled for an interview and assessment.

The cost of room and board is far less than we pay today and they have more applicable services for her.

We have staff at the new facility cheering our decision to apply.

Still I think, “what happens if she does not get accepted?”

I am worried.

Then I think what Pooh would say to me, “what happens if she is accepted?”

And I am comforted.

Do you worry about circumstances? What do you do to mitigate the thoughts driving worry?
